Not the most convincing of scorelines but when you take it that we were up
against probably the most defensive team Ive seen this season it was an
excellent result. Add to that a large travelling Perth Support (1500+) and a
great atmosphere throughout the match when we outsung the Scumdee tinks for
the whole 90 mins and it makes for a very enjoyable afternoon.
Saints started well in the first half with Georgio showing just why we've
missed him this season. Attila and Dasovic look as though they will prove
to be a good combination this season and Weir is playing some of his best
football since coming to Perth. Dundee defended in depth and indulged in the
usual 2-footed hacks and off-the-ball nudges (most aimed at Georgio and
John O'Neil). This meant that Saints were closed down fairly effectively for
most of the game with sometimes 3 or 4 defenders on Georgio etc. This did
allow Dasovic and Attila plenty of time to push forward but in most cases one
loose pass and any attack broke up.
At the other end Main had little to do tho he grabbed a few crosses and
made an excellent save when he skidded outside the box on the wet pitch but
managed to keep the ball inside the box. Griffin and Weir were solid in
defence and McQ and Davison were able to push forward. The only real problem
seemed to be the passes and long balls from defence which rarely found their
mark.
Saints had a few chances in the first half with Attila and Roddy coming
close from outside the box and Attila forcing Thomson into a great save on
the half-hour after a goalmouth scramble.
The second-half started much the same way with Saints dominating the game
more and more. Attila pushed forward more and had one amazing run through
the middle followed by a shot from about 25-30 yards which bounced off the
underside of the crossbar. Just when we were starting to think it would be one
of those days, with 12 mins to go, Roddy twisted 3 defenders and laid the
ball back to Jenko who ran to the byeline and sent a deep cross over for
Georgio to head home and send the fans mental !!!!
After that there was really no stopping Saints, though thanks to some
crap refereeing Scumdee had a series of dodgy free-kicks on the edge of the
box towards the end which put some pressure on the Saints defence. Saints
tried to slow things down by bringing on Preston and Scott for Jenko and
Georgio and did enought to get the points.
The celebrations at the final whistle were amazing and it has to be said
that the result went a long way to making up for the CC final match. Jenko
and Attila were both booked.
