Temple Of Saints - East Fife Suffer For Their Sins
Scottish League Coca-Cola Cup Second Round 13/08/96
East Fife 1 Saints 5 (no more messing about)
Team :: Main,McQuillan,Davidson,Attila,Weir,Griffin,Scott,O'Neil,Grant,
Georgio,Tosh
Subs :: McCluskey,Preston,Farquhar
This is more like it - not quite as one-sided as the score makes out but a well-deserved
result for the Saints.
Goal 1 came from Georgio after 15 mins after a goalmouth scramble - O'Boyles
foot finally tapping home under Lindsay "Dropsie" Hamilton in goal. Cue a chorus of the new
song "Georgie, Georgie, Fuckin God!!!".
The second was from a Phizzy volley from the edge of the box, after some
good build up work from Roddy and Georgio. That was 23 mins gone.
3 minutes later tho, it looked as though we were up to our usual tricks
when a cross found Dwairka (sp?) unmarked at the back post to pull one
back for the Methil men.
Normal service was resumed after 40 mins tho when Tosh broke free on the
right wing and sent over what we all thought was a cross going over the
bar, but was in fact a brilliant swerving lob into the top-left corner
of the net leaving Hamilton gob-smacked.
The second-half was a much quieter affair. East Fife made two or three
good chances forcing Main into some excellent saves. Roddy scored a 4th for
us after 64 minutes. The game started to get scrappy after that with Tosh
and Weir both being booked for retaliation - although in Weirs case it
definitely looked justified. East Fife resorted to some heavy fouling and
diving a la Quitongo and IMHO were lucky to finish with 11 men.
Saints used all their subs replacing Tosh, McQuillan and Scott with
Farquhar missing a sitter with 5 mins to go. Roddy made amends tho with
his second right on the final whistle.
Attila got the sponsors MoM award and made the presentation mob wait
after the game until he did his usual cheers with the Saints fans - another
boost to his cult status. The crowd was 1618 (according to Teletext - the
announcer at Bayview said bugger all), with well over half being Saintees.
One annoying thing tho - I know East Fife want to cut costs but 1.30
for a programme and 75p for a peh is a bit OTT.
