Temple Of Saints - Saints Go Top
League Division One Sat 7th Sept 96.
Saints 2 Partick 0
Team :: Main,McQuillan,Donaldson,Farquhar,Griffin,McCluskey,Scott,Tosh,Grant,
Georgio,Preston
Subs :: Whiteford,King,Robertson
Well with Weir,Davidson,Attila,ONeil,Jenko all out the average age of the
Saints team was 22 and there were 6 teenagers in the 14. Danny captained the
team and tho it looked like a rerun of the Falkirk match we are now on top
of the league on goal difference with a game in hand - OH happy days !!!
Saints got off to a good start and immediately began to pressurise the
Partick defence. Tosh and McQ were linking up well on the right and Preston
looked good on the left. Roddy was obviously under instructions to stay up
the park and only Georgio / Scott looked unfit (probably still knackered
after Tuesday night).
In defence Griffin and McCluskey looked excellent tho McCluskeys tackles
are of the take-no-prisoners variety and could cause trouble for him in the
future. Danny was his usual immense self and Donaldson looked ok but still
seems to lack experience.
Cairns in Particks goals should have been sent off in the first half for
handling outside the box but the ref as usual was a blind git (amongst
other things). Saints were making plenty of chances but Partick were packing
the box well to spoil any real efforts. Roddy had probably the best 2
attempts of the first half but should have squared each time instead of
shooting. Georgio didnt seem to be as sharp as usual and Phizzys confidence
in front of goal seems a bit suspect.
Second half started in a similar vein and though Saints dominated for long
periods, you kept feeling that Partick would nick a goal. However, Saints
managed to score after 75 mins when a defensive mix-up allowed Roddy to
break through and chip the goalie. Not bad (and the bookie paid for my curry
tonight at 6-1!!!!!).
After that you would have thought it would get a bit easier but Partick
came back well and put Saints under some pressure for the last 10 mins or so.
There was still time for Phizzy to miss a sitter before Tosh made it 2-0
on the stroke of full-time thanks to an excellent through pass from Georgio.
Overall not a bad performance for the boyz and we didnt need to use the
subs. Farquhar got Man Of the match - pretty good choice IMHO.
