The unbeaten record now stretches to 11 in a row and we're 11 points
clear at the top of the league and at least we've managed a live game on
Sky where we didnt lose. So thats the good news now the bad - we were
pretty crap even allowing for the missing Davison and McQuillan and the
obviously unfit Jenko (he only lasted 40 mins before Attila replaced him).
At least the boys will have been brought down to earth and might realise
that the league will have to be won.
The game itself was probably fairly entertaining for the armchair fan
with plenty of end-to-end action although the finishing from both teams
was pretty woeful. At least Saints got their shots on target. For the
Saintees in the 9000+ crowd tho it was a pretty frustrating evening as
several players performed well below par - obviously suffering from a lack
of match practice.
The defence was fairly solid with ONeil stepping in at right-back for the
injured McQuillan. Weir had a pretty poor game and suffered from a lack of
pace whilst Preston altho by no means dreadful seemed to mishit all his
passes. Only Danny can come out of it with any credit with another
excellent performance although he also suffered from some nervy moments
including a couple of dodgy pass-backs to Main. Jesus had an average night
given that he was rarely tested.
In midfield Phizzy managed to both wow and piss off the fans with some
really good ball work and keepie-up followed by some great runs through
the Partick defence let down by some very poor finishing. As the game went
on he also appeared to lose confidence - not what we expect from one of
the more experienced members of the squad. Tosh out on the right wing had
a good game altho he also seemed short of match fitness. In the middle
(and at right back in the second half) Dasovic played well enough but too
many passes went astray or straight to Partick players. Jenko was
obviously unfit and suffered from his usual reluctance to push forward.
Attila came on to replace him and had a fairly quiet time of it although
he had an excellent run straight up the middle of the park towards the end
of the first half.
Up front Georgio ran his arse off as usual but seemed to want to do all
the work himself rather than lay the ball off. Still he had a fairly good
game given that there were rarely fewer than 3 defenders marking him and
they made sure he was heavily marked !! Roddy had an average game with
only a few glimpses of genius. He suffered more than most for the lack of
match practice and seemed deadbeat by full-time.
Overall Saints had most of the play and the better chances but given the
last couple of months we were due an off-night. At least we didnt lose !!
