Another story of a cup game full of "if onlys" - starting with if only we had started a bit sharper, and if only we'd not let in a couple of bad goals and if only Fergie didnt hit the post and if only we had an unbiased ref - ah well some things never change.
McQuillan passed a late fitness test to play but Davison was ruled out. Saints started with the usual 4-4-2 formation with Phizzy out on the left wing (why?). The Huns started a bit sharper tho and looked a lot faster up front. Saints managed to play reasonably well in midfield but were always caught out in the first half because nobody seemed to want to push forward and put some pressure on Gough and Moore.
The first goal came after 8 minutes when Dasovic was ruled to have fouled a Spawn Of Satan. Albertz stepped up for the free-kick which meant everyone expected the usual rocket-shot. Instead he passed to the Fat Geordie Git who crossed to the middle. The ball was only half-cleared (with Weir protesting he was fouled), Albertz sent it back in and in the scuffle Bo Andersen prodded it home. Bugger we all though we're going to get gubbed.
The Huns second came after 30 mins when a long ball from the right found Rosenthal (the new diving git) who looked offside. However the ref didnt blow and he was able to beat Main from close in.
Second-half was a much better effort from Saints with the boyz dominating for long periods and Main reduced to catching the odd cross ball or take a goal-kick after the ball went into orbit. The Saints midfield were finally starting to put some resistance up with both Dasovic and Attila having good games. Preston and McQuillan were starting to do some nice overlaps and Scott and ONeil helped push forward.
Fergie came on to replace Roddy after 60 mins, and had Saints best chance of the game when his header came off the bottom of FatBoy Gorams right post. Phizzy followed up soon after when Georgio sent a beautiful through ball into the middle for him to force Goram into a good save. The last 15 mins (with Tosh on for Phizzy) saw Saints with a lot of pressure but no real efforts on target although they forced plenty of corners (I reckoned 9 or 10 for the game).
By this time we knew it wouldnt be our day but the fans (all the bottom tier of the Broomloan) made bloody sure we outsung the Devils Disciples for the whole 90 mins - best of which was "Youre only part-time supporters" as the home fans started leaving at 4.25.
There was a booking for McQuillan after a fracas with Sheepy Robertson (altho the Hun avoided any punishment). Ian Ferguson (ie the Hun Psycho) was also yellow-carded after scything down Scott. However apart from these 2 incidents and the usual Fat Geordie whining and thuggery, the game was played in a good spirit.
So thats the Cup run over and we can now concentrate on humping the rest of the league and partying at Easter !!!!
