St. Johnstone came to life in only 9 minutes when a Keith O'Halloran pile-driver was palmed out by McMillan and the keeper recovered well to save George O'Boyle's header from the rebound. Gerry McMahon sent over a corner that Whiteford headed just wide and in 20 minutes keeper McMillan did well to save at his post from O'Boyle.
Rangers were hardly seen in attack except for a Gunn free kick that flew wide, before shaking the visitors in 35 minutes when McFee found Gunn and his pass released Glazier whose chip beat Robertson but glanced off the outside of the upright. Keeper McMillan had another five-star save from McMahon as the half ended.
McMahon again had a chance but had the miss of the match from five yards just after the restart and O'Halloran clipped the crossbar a minute later. Gary Bollan broke the deadlock with a flashing free kick in 68 minutes in off the post. Young keeper McKay saved an O'Boyle try with his legs in 85 minutes but Roddie (!) Grant made sure for the Saints with a goal in the last minute. Saints used O'Neil for McMahon and McCluskey for Nash.
