Oh well so much for the sexy entertaining stuff. Mind you when faced with an opposition that consists of the cheating trio of strikers in Wales, Jackson and McBoggin then it's not really surprising that there was little attractive football on the park. St. Sandy made one change from midweek with Marco the V coming in and Pope dropping to the bench. Chief kept his right-back slot ahead of Danny and Kiegan got another start up front.
As
for the game well the scoreling says it all. There was very little
goalmouth action to speak of in the early stages although Gargoyle Fulton
managed to miss a couple of sitters in the first 15 minutes. The Gorgie
Gits had said that they wanted to clinch the UEFA slot no matter how and
it was plain to see that they were more than willing to foul and cheat
their way today. Kiegan came in for some early attention from the Hun
reserve defence whilst at the other end Wales convinced the large Saints
support that we are much better off for not having such an overacting
cheat on the books. But when you see McBoggin and Dive-Dive Jackson in
action it's perhaps easy to see where he's picking up the tips.
Makel picked up the first booking of the game on 20 minutes for a retaliatory foul after Jackson was rightly refused a free-kick. Jackson himself was lucky not to join him after spending five minutes arguing back with the ref - suffice to say that if we had the 10yds for dissent rule in place in the first half Saints would have been playing in Wembley. Of course with Mr Non-Controversial Rowbotham in charge Marco the V got the same card 5 minutes later.
There was little further action in the first half - a Kane shot going wide was the sum of it. Not to say we didn't try - Del and Chief worked well down the right and Jones and Kane had decent games in the middle. Parker suffered from being too lightweight and the close attentions of the Huns reserves though (perhaps the publicity isn't helping his anonymity), and Keyring was just crap.
2nd half saw Makel replaced by that other whinger Cameron although there was little difference in the play with the game one of the scrappiest of the season. The cheating continued with Jackson and McBoggin comnbining to try and get Kane a yellow. Still Saints were making some chances - Del had a brilliant solo break after 55 minutes but decided to go on himself when a square ball to Parker looked the better option. And Jones had a similar break on the hour mark but his shot was weak.
65 minutes though saw the ref finally take action. With Dods and McBoggin chasing a ball heading out of play, Forrest shielded it for a Saints goal kick only for McBoggin to aim a psycho kick at the Saints player. No hesitation from Baldy for a change and an immediate red card was produced. Of course he stuck with tradition and booked Kane 5 minutes later.
Despite the man advantage Saints struggled to make any impression although the game opened up quite a bit. Gerry and the Messiah came on for Keyring and Parker but the former was just shite and the latter lacked any sort of sharpness in front of goal although he did a lot better at winning the ball from the Hun reserves.
MoM for me was probably Del - he ran his arse off and looked to be the sort of player that could turn the game. The defence looked solid enough though and it was good to see the team keep their heads despite the cheating and total lack of sportsmanship from the Gorgie Gits. They like to think of themselves as the Embra Huns - they looked the part today.
